Diagnosis
(A Caretaker’s Anthem)

I wrote this at Susanna’s piano on March 1st, 2020. We had no idea then what the pandemic was gonna do. I wrote it thinking of her brother who has lived with his husband for decades, both of them well into their 80s and having lived with HIV since the 80s. I wrote it thinking, too, of Dreama, who had Hep C and then was cured of it, something she never dreamed possible. I wrote it thinking, too, of all the children, the parents, the lovers, the friends who have provided care for their ailing or dying parents, children, lovers or friends. Tenderness is essential, and this song is the tenderness of the caretaker in sonic form.

A tune about the travails of loving someone who as yet does not love themself, it can be dangerous; it's like a box of matches, one of them having begun to take light.

It's a box many find ourselves in, and some never escape. Inside it, we can find good information, good inner-formation, and then we can grow beyond even the possibility of it.
